Paediatric Occupational Therapy

Are you worried about your child's communication skills? Maybe you're concerned they’re not keeping up with their peers in terms of developmental milestones. Perhaps you've noticed they struggle with expressing their needs or understanding and following instructions. Regardless of the concern, paediatric occupational therapy can make a hugely meaningful difference.

What is Paediatric Occupational Therapy?

Paediatric occupational therapy is a specialised form of therapy designed to help children develop the skills they need to undertake everyday activities. Occupational therapy aims to help children reach their developmental milestones and improve their ability to engage in activities like self-care, play, schoolwork, and social interactions.

By addressing these areas, occupational therapists support children in overcoming challenges, building confidence, and thriving in their daily routines at home, school, and beyond. Through tailored, evidence-based approaches, occupational therapy can help children reach their full potential and engage more fully in the world around them.

Occupational therapy can be beneficial for individuals with autism, ADHD, and a range of other developmental disorders. However, please also note that at Milestones Kids Therapy Hub, you do not need an official diagnosis to begin our sessions. Our focus is on helping each child progress and reach their full potential, regardless of diagnosis.

Fostering Your Child's Development with Proven, Evidence-Based Methods

At Milestone Kids Therapy Hub, we provide paediatric occupational therapy to children aged 0-16 in Wetherill Park, Sydney. We understand that every child is unique, with strengths, capabilities, and ways of learning. That's why we create personalised therapy plans that integrate evidence-based, child-led strategies, tailoring each to best suit the personality, interests, and developmental needs of your child.

We also love collaborating with the families, parents, and caregivers of children to ensure consistency and support beyond therapy sessions. We provide families with practical strategies that can be incorporated into everyday routines to reinforce progress and support the child's development in their natural environment.

How Occupational Therapy Can Support Your Child’s Development

Occupational therapy offers a unique and holistic approach to helping your child grow and develop essential skills for everyday life. From managing sensory sensitivities to mastering daily routines, OT works on the foundation that every child has their own strengths, challenges, and pace of learning. Here’s how occupational therapy can support your child’s development:

Sensory Processing:

Does your child get overwhelmed by loud noises or dislike certain textures? Or maybe they have trouble sitting still or seem to crave constant movement. Sensory challenges like these can make everyday activities feel overwhelming for kids with sensory sensitivities. Sensory processing can help them feel more at ease in their world. Sensory processing at Milestones Kids Therapy Hub may look like:

  • Supporting kids in understanding and navigating sensory experiences like sounds, lights, or touch.

  • Helping kids stay calm and focused in busy environments through sensory strategies

Fine Motor Skills:

Fine motor skills involve the small movements that are key to so many daily activities, like writing or tying shoelaces. We help your child practise these skills in fun, creative ways that keep them engaged. This can look like:

  • Practising handwriting and pencil grip

  • Strengthening hand muscles for tasks like tying shoelaces

  • Encouraging creative play through drawing, crafting, or building with blocks

Gross Motor Skills:

Gross motor skills involve the use of large muscle groups like the arms and legs to perform whole-body movements like running, walking, and jumping, as well as tasks such as balance and coordination. These skills are essential for a child’s physical development and their ability to engage in play, school activities, and daily routines. A paediatric OT can help to:

  • Improve balance & coordination

  • Enhance bodily & social awareness

  • Develop strength & stability

  • Develop skills for sports & recreational play

Self-care & Daily Living Skills:

One of the primary goals of occupational therapy is to support children in becoming more independent in their daily lives. This includes developing the skills needed for self-care and daily activities. Sessions with a paediatric OT, with a focus on building independence, can look like:

  • Practising dressing themselves (e.g., using zippers & buttons)

  • Supporting mealtime skills (e.g., using utensils & trying new foods)

  • Building routines for personal hygiene (e.g., washing hands & brushing teeth)

Cognitive & Executive Functioning:

Cognitive and executive functioning skills are critical to a child's ability to plan, organise, and complete tasks. Occupational therapy helps children develop these skills, which are essential for schoolwork, problem-solving, and managing daily activities. This can involve:

  • Strengthening memory & attention

  • Teaching problem-solving & decision-making strategies

  • Helping develop effective time management & organisational habits

How Occupational Therapy Can Make a Difference

Occupational therapists help children:

  • Improve their ability to look after themselves (e.g., dressing & feeding themselves)

  • Gain confidence and independence in daily tasks (e.g., self-care & toileting)

  • Build their social skills & ability to form relationships (e.g., communication & problem-solving)

  • Manage sensory sensitivities & processing (e.g., responding to sights, signs, & textures)

  • Manage their emotional responses (e.g., self-regulation)

  • Prepare for school (e.g., fine motor skills for learning & support to engage in play)

What to Expect at Milestones Kids Therapy Hub

We'll always start with a comprehensive initial assessment and chat with you (the parents or caregivers), from which we'll craft a tailored therapy plan suited to your child's needs. In doing this, we work closely with families to ensure that the strategies we implement are cohesive with their daily lives and beneficial for everyone involved. Throughout this process, we provide continual support to children and their families, adjusting as needed to promote the best possible outcomes.
