Regulation Before Communication: Why Sensory Processing is Key to Learning

For children to learn, engage, and communicate, they first need to feel regulated. Regulation—particularly sensory regulation—is the foundation for everything else. If a child is dysregulated, whether due to sensory overload, unmet sensory needs, or difficulty self-regulating, they are not in an optimal state for learning, interacting, or developing new skills.

The Link Between Sensory Regulation and Communication

When a child is overwhelmed, their brain prioritises survival over social connection. Instead of being able to focus on speech, language, or play, they may be in fight, flight, or freeze mode. This is why expecting a child to learn without first supporting their regulation is unrealistic.

Through DIR: Floortime, we understand that following a child’s lead, tuning into their individual differences, and supporting regulation through movement, sensory input, and connection are essential before expecting engagement or communication.

Why Speech and OT Work Together

This is where occupational therapy (OT) and speech pathology go hand in hand. OT helps children achieve regulation through sensory supports like deep pressure, movement (e.g., swinging, bouncing), or tactile input. Speech therapy then builds on this regulation to develop engagement, interaction, and communication skills.

Without regulation, there is no learning. This is why at Milestones Kids Therapy Hub, our speech and OT teams work together, ensuring each child’s unique sensory needs are met so they can engage, communicate, and thrive.

Every Child is Unique

There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Every child has individual differences, and their interests and preferences should lead the way in therapy. By incorporating what they love and respecting their sensory needs, we create an environment where they feel safe, engaged, and ready to learn.

Supporting Your Child’s Regulation

If your child struggles with communication, consider whether regulation might be the missing piece. Our team is here to support them with a holistic, child-led approach.
